Overall, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were younger than non-Indigenous prisoners, which follows the same profile from previous years.

At 30 June, 2016:

  • The median age of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 31 years, while for non-Indigenous prisoners it was 36 years. (Table 1)
  • Of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners, 24% (2,511 prisoners) were aged 24 years or under, compared to 14% (3,831 prisoners) of all non-Indigenous prisoners.
  • While for prisoners aged 40 years or more, there were 23% (2,427 prisoners) in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoner population, compared with 36% (10,172 prisoners) in the non-Indigenous prisoner population. (Table 20)
